چکیده
Abstract This paper presents the results of centrifuge tests on rainfall-induced instabilities in variably saturated slopes. The roles rainfall intensity and initial conditions, such as slope angle, porosity degree saturation soil, failure initiation postfailure kinematics are considered. patterns, infiltration profile deformation at prefailure stages characterized. indicate that failures usually follow one following two modes, i.e. slide-to-flow flowslide modes. former pattern is characterized by soil mass flow after along a continuous shear surface, while latter more relevant to rapid increase resulting surface erosion channels followed acceleration mass. gives rise several superficial surfaces longer run-out distances. profiles play key initiating stage subsequently mobilizing stage. Our test data, together with data from literature, presented threshold curves define critical condition under infiltration.

Modelling multiple solute transport in variably saturated soils
This paper presents two models typical of two different approaches often used for modelling the advective-dispersive transport of multiple ions in variably-saturated porous media. The first approach assumes that all solute reactions can be incorporated directly into the governing transport equations (the one-step method), while the second approach divides the mathematical solution process into ...
متن کاملCentrifuge Modelling With Transparent Soil and Laser Aided Imaging
Transparent synthetic soils have been developed as a soil surrogate to enable internal visualization of geotechnical processes in physical models. While significant developments have been made to enhance the methodology and capabilities of transparent soil modelling, the technique is not yet exploited to its fullest potential. Tests are typically conducted at 1 g in small bench size models, whi...
متن کاملAssessment of Landslide Volume for Alishan Highway Based On Database of Rainfall-Induced Slope Failure
In this paper, a study of slope failures along the Alishan Highway is carried out. An innovative empirical model is developed based on 15-year records of rainfall-induced slope failures. The statistical models are intended for assessing the volume of landslide for slope failure along the Alishan Highway in the future. The rainfall data considered in the proposed models include the effective cum...
متن کاملContribution of ``soils and Foundations'' to Studies on Rainfall-induced Slope Failure
The many recent slope failures due to heavy rainfall have been accompanied by signiˆcant loss of life, and massive damage to infrastructures and heritage. Many studies have been done to investigate the mechanism of rainfall-induced slope failures and establish a prevention system for slope disasters. In this paper, the state-of-the-art research works on slope failures due to rainfall published ...
متن کاملEect of the shape of the soil hydraulic functions near saturation on variably-saturated ̄ow predictions
Relatively small changes in the shape of the soil water retention curve near saturation can signi®cantly aect the results of numerical simulations of variably saturated ̄ow, including the performance of the numerical scheme itself in terms of stability and rate of convergence. In this paper, we use a modi®ed form of the van Genuchten±Mualem (VGM) soil hydraulic functions to account for a very ...
